0630-Check-in

0700-0900: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This training will equip officers with the skills to identify individuals in the community who may have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), as well as to understand how to best interact with, serve, and protect them during a police interaction.

0900-1100: Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement: An Update on the Science

This course is a two-hour training within the ABLE program. It aims to strengthen the skills and strategies of active bystandership based on current and emerging research. It includes research on tactics for intervention for both Notice + Decide and Decide + Act.

1100-1130: Lunch

1130-1500: De-escalation Scenarios

This training is designed for active engagement in written, video, and in-person scenarios. Members will engage scenarios both in the classroom and the Ti Simulator to practice the concepts learned in earlier trainings and continue developing the skills for effective de-escalation.

Uniform of the day is required with duty belt and vest for all in-service training.

Reporting Instructions
Location - MPA Academy Annex - Classrooms 4/5

Time - 0630-1500 hours

Members must be on-time and remain in class for the entire training period.

If a member needs emergency leave the day of scheduled training, the member is to notify their chain of command and district training coordinator. The official who excused the member from training shall notify MPA at mpa.continuingstudies@dc.gov
Signup Details
District and Unit Training Coordinators shall schedule members for all 2026 PDT in person classes, based on the needs of the district or unit.

Members on limited duty may attend the “Report Writing-ABLE-Interacting with Developmental Disabilities" course day at the academy if their participation does not violate the duty restrictions prescribed by the Police and Fire Clinic.

All registered members will receive an email notification from ACADIS providing the course description and reporting instructions to include the reporting location(s) and uniform/equipment requirements for each day of training.
